Room for large local models on a laptop. Apple's M5 Max with an 18-core CPU, 40-core GPU and 128GB of unified memory, plus an 8TB SSD and the nano-texture display, in Space Black.
Why you'll love it
- 128GB unified memory: the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine share one 128GB pool at 614GB/s, which leaves room for large language models entirely in memory.
- M5 Max power: 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores, 40-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
- 8TB SSD: the largest storage option for this model.
- Nano-texture Liquid Retina XDR: 14.2-inch, 3024 by 1964, ProMotion up to 120Hz, 1,000 nits sustained and 1,600 nits peak for HDR.
- Real ports: three Thunderbolt 5 up to 120Gb/s, HDMI, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack. Drives up to four external displays.
AI on this Mac
This is the MacBook our model evals ran on. These are the peak memory and speed we measured on it:
- Muse Glimmer 30B: 22GB at 23 tokens per second in its Q4_K_M build, or 61GB at 12 in its full BF16 build
- Qwen 3.8 27B: 46GB at 17 tokens per second in its FP8 build, or 68GB at 14 in BF16
- Gemma 4 12B: 27GB at 19 tokens per second
Good for testing models away from the office, long documents on a laptop, and private work while you travel.
